Work is due to begin on the Cross Hands East Strategic Employment Site. Carmarthenshire County Council has attracted European and Welsh Government funding of £9 million and invested a further £4 million to develop the site in a bid to bring more jobs to the area.
Contractors Alun Griffiths Ltd. will start on site mid April 2014 and the target for completion is Spring/Summer 2015. It is hoped the site will bring a huge employment boost by providing potential building floor space of 40,000sqm to attract businesses.
The development will be managed and implemented by the local authority’s Physical Regeneration division, with funding for the scheme having come from the European Regional Development Fund and the Welsh Government via the Western Valleys Regeneration Area programme and a Transport grant.
Phase one will include a new access road from the A48 to Black Lion Road, internal site highways, gas, water and electricity provisions, internal drainage and landscaping, and the preparation of five development plots.
Executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “This is something we have been working on for some time and I’m delighted that we can now make a start on site. It is an investment in Carmarthenshire’s future as we will equip the county with the physical infrastructure necessary for the development of a competitive local economy.”
Council Leader Cllr Kevin Madge said: “Bringing jobs to Carmarthenshire is a priority for the council and the Cross Hands East Strategic Employment Site is central to this. This is a very exciting project.”
