After 3 days the community based TB screening in Llwynhendy has come to an end. The van was deployed to the Joiners Arms, The Scarlets and the Llwynhendy Health Centre. Extra screening sessions were added to help fulfil demand with over one thousand people screened. The screening was organised by Public Health Wales and Hywel Dda Health Board which received a huge response despite the bad weather conditions.
Cllr’s Jason Hart and Sharen Davies met up with Dr Mason and the team on Thursday 30th May at the Joiners Arms in Llwynhendy. The team briefed the Councillors and give them information leaflets to distribute among the community and social media prior to the screening.
Due to a huge turnout for the screening some people missed out. However their details were taken and they will be sent hospital appointments in due course. Cllr’s Hart and Davies have been reassured by Dr Mason that Hywel Dda are planning to set up the additional clinics in Prince Phillip Hospital rather than Glangwili to make it more accessible. The team feel that timed appointments in a managed hospital setting will be better than a first come first served basis.
The demand was beyond that which could be managed with the maximum resources that could be deployed in a community setting.
There is only one van in the UK which is based in London. The van cost just under £450’000 and is equipped with state of the art equipment.
The local community have expressed their thanks to Public Health Wales and Hywel Dda Health Board for all their hard work within Llwynhendy.
