IT’S Real Nappy Week from April 28 to May 5 so there’s no better time to ditch the disposables and give them a go.
Use real nappies instead of disposables and not only will you save money and help the environment, but your little one will be leading the way in the fashion stakes.
Modern real nappies are fashionable and fun and come in a range of styles, designs and colours – from denim to camouflage and cow print to ruffles – the possibilities are endless.
They are also easy to use, there is no need to boil wash, they can save you money compared to disposables and they reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill.
The council’s waste and recycling section has teamed up with local real nappy stockists Nappy Go Lucky and Little Lambs to raise awareness on the benefits of using real nappies and will be in Guildhall Square in Carmarthen on Wednesday, April 30 between 10am and 3pm.
To celebrate Real Nappy Week, a new cut price real nappy trial pack (available to Carmarthenshire residents only) will be launched at the event.
The pack includes two pocket nappies (one size fits all) along with three cotton pre-folds and a wrap for just £15 instead of the recommended retail price of £29. The packs are limited to one per household, per child.
Sarah Hyde of Carmarthen-based Nappy Go Lucky said: “Many new parents are keen to try out cloth nappies but are put off by the start up costs and don’t know if they will work for them. By offering some nappies to try out before committing to a whole pack we hope to convince new parents to ‘go real’.”
Figures show that an estimated 200 million disposable nappies are thrown away in Wales each year – that’s 38,000 tonnes of unnecessary waste going to landfill.
Using real nappies instead of disposables can also save parents up to £500 or more if used on subsequent children.
Council waste minimisation/recycling officer Karen Fulham said: “More and more parents are discovering the benefits of real nappies. With today’s modern designs, washing machines and the use of flushable liners, using real nappies couldn’t be easier. Many fasten with fabric fasteners or poppers and can be washed along with your baby’s clothes. So if you haven’t tried them yet, give them a go, you may just be surprised.”
