Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is issuing a road safety message after three motorcyclists tragically lost their lives at three separate incidents over the bank holiday weekend.
The first incident took place in the early hours of Friday morning in Neath, where crews from Neath and Morriston attended a road traffic collision involving a motorcycle, resulting in a fire involving three cars. Crews extinguished the fire using two hose reel jets and two breathing apparatus. Police and Ambulance were both in attendance.
A second incident took place on Friday afternoon near Cardigan. Crews from Cardigan and Crymych attended the scene, involving a road traffic collision between two motorcycles and a lorry.
On Saturday afternoon, crews from Crymych and Cardigan attended a further road traffic collision on the B4548 at Gwbert, Cardigan involving a motorcycle and a pick-up truck and trailer. One male rider lost his life and a second was injured. He was conveyed to hospital via air ambulance.
Road Traffic Collision Reduction Officer Kenny MacDonald said, “Our message is to remain cautious and vigilant while on the road and especially during holiday periods when the roads are busier. The Easter weekend saw a spell of sunny weather, which meant many motorcyclists were out on Wales’ roads – please remember it is easy to miss them, so ensure you check your mirrors regularly and be spatially aware when your car is both in motion and stationary.”
Head of Community Safety Karen Jones added,
“We have some of the most scenic routes in the UK and this means they become very busy during public holidays and periods of fine weather. Our advice is to never take risks to make progress on your journey as this can sadly lead to tragic consequences. We would encourage drivers and motorcyclists to attend one of the many road safety events we put on with our partners to improve safety on the roads.”
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service offer a range of Welsh Government subsidised short courses for motorcyclists and drivers to help reduce the risks.
