Innovative design and pioneering technology helped Swansea University scoop for a top award for one of its highest-profile new buildings.

The Active Office, which demonstrates the Active Building concept developed by SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge Centre (IKC), was officially opened a year ago, and won the Innovation in Delivering a Sustainable Education title at the prestigious Education Buildings Wales Awards which celebrate excellence and achievement in the field.

The building at the Bay Campus is a daily example of how to integrate innovative technologies that generate, store and release solar energy and challenges current construction methods. Designed by SPECIFIC, the UK IKC led by Swansea University, was conceived, designed and delivered in just eight months, using off-site modular construction. The office was praised by judges for proving the viability of the Active Building concept.

The University had two other buildings shortlisted at the event  – the  Computational Foundry and The College were in the running for the Project of The Year (Colleges & Universities) with the Computational Foundry also  just missed out on the Innovating Learning Spaces awards.

Joanna Clarke, Active Building architect: “This honour is a wonderful way to mark the anniversary of the Active Office’s official opening. This award recognises the efforts we are making in this field and is the result of ongoing collaborations and partnership working. We are thrilled that the judges have chosen to honour us.”

Swyddfa Weithredol yn cipio anrhydedd mawr mewn gwobrau adeiladu

Helpodd dyluniad arloesol a thechnoleg arloesol i Brifysgol Abertawe gipio gwobr nodedig ar gyfer un o’i hadeiladau newydd proffil uchel.

Agorodd y Swyddfa Weithredol, sy’n rhoi’r cysyniad o Adeilad Gweithredol a ddatblygwyd gan Ganolfan Arloesedd a Gwybodaeth SPECIFIC (IKC) ar waith, yn swyddogol flwyddyn yn ôl, ac enillodd deitl Arloesi wrth Gyflawni Addysg Gynaliadwy neithiwr yng Ngwobrau nodedig Adeiladau Addysg Cymru sy’n dathlu rhagoriaeth a chyflawniad yn y maes.

Mae’r adeilad, ar Gampws y Bae, yn enghraifft ddyddiol o sut i integreiddio technolegau arloesi sy’n creu, yn storio ac yn rhyddhau ynni solar, gan herio dulliau adeiladu presennol. Wedi’i ddylunio gan SPECIFIC, yr IKC yn y DU a arweinir gan Brifysgol Abertawe, cafodd ei lunio, ei ddylunio a’i adeiladu mewn wyth mis yn unig, gan ddefnyddio dulliau adeiladu modiwlaidd oddi ar y safle. Cafodd y swyddfa ganmoliaeth gan y beirniaid am brofi dichonoldeb y cysyniad o Adeiladau Gweithredol.

Roedd dau adeilad arall yn y Brifysgol ar y rhestr fer yn y digwyddiad – roedd y Ffowndri Gyfrifiadol a’r Coleg hefyd yn cystadlu am Brosiect y Flwyddyn (Colegau a Phrifysgolion), a bu’r Ffowndri Gyfrifiadol yn agos iawn i ennill y wobr Lleoedd Dysgu Arloesol.

Meddai Joanna Clarke, pensaer Adeiladau Gweithredol: “Mae’r anrhydedd hwn yn ffordd wych o nodi blwyddyn ers agoriad swyddogol y Swyddfa Weithredol.Mae’r wobr hon yn cydnabod yr ymdrechion rydym yn eu gwneud yn y maes hwn ac mae’n ganlyniad cydweithio a gweithio mewn partneriaeth parhaus.Rydym wrth ein boddau bod y beirniaid wedi dewis ein hanrhydeddu ni.”
