A two-week event is underway at Margam Park to raise awareness of personal safety and crime prevention to school children living in Neath Port Talbot.

The annual event, known as Crucial Crew, comprises of 52 primary schools and over 1700 pupils aged between 10 and 11. The pupils rotate between 12 different workshops lasting 10 minutes each, all delivering key messages on topics such as how to tackle dangers, playing safely, what action to take in the event of a fire, the effects of drugs and alcohol, and how to stay safe on the roads. The workshops include pupils having to complete a number of tasks and deal with certain situations that they may come across in everyday life.

Councillor Leanne Jones, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Protection, said:

“One of our key priorities is to ensure children are kept safe, healthy and engaged with their learning.

“Crucial Crew is an invaluable event for organisations to pass on key safety messages through a fun way of learning. This includes ensuring children know who to contact if something goes wrong and knowing how to look after themselves, friends and family members.”

The organisations delivering workshops at this year’s event include: South Wales Police, Mid and West Wales Fire Service, Western Power, RNLI, Food Standards Agency, Network Rail, Calon DVS, WACADA, Dogs Trust, NPT Recycling, NPT Road Safety and Safe Schools Transport. This year’s event also saw workshops held by selected ‘Neath Port Talbot Schools Peer Educators’ who are senior secondary school pupils that deliver messages around children’s rights and online safety.

This year’s event started on Tuesday 25th June and finishes on Friday 5th July.

The event is organised by the Safer Neath Port Talbot Partnership and is sponsored by Tata Steel.
