Thought for the week (we 25th May 2014)

The campaigning is nearly all over and this week we get the opportunity to cast our votes in the European elections.

We’ll have to wait until next Sunday night to see if the recent polling proves to be right and there will have been a dramatic shift from the more established political parties towards UKIP.

If that does happen it may well have a knock on effect on the general election which will be held this time next year – we’ll have to wait and see. For now we have to decide who represents us in Europe.

The glossy brochures from all the parties have come through our letter boxes and the canvassing is all but over. Having listened to the the claims counter claims it’s up to us where we place that cross on the ballot paper and by doing so will have had our say and practiced our democratic right, a right many in our world would love to have. That’s democracy and thank God for it!

When, by election day all the campaigning will be over and the electorate having decided, let’s hope that all the manifesto promises will be kept so that the needs of the people will be met. Politicians have come under much scrutiny in recent times and there have been failings and disillusionment and apathy have followed. We must not forget, however, that in the main those who seek office are dedicated to improve society and do the best they can through the political system to seek the good of all.

That’s why those elected deserve our support and our prayers as they represent us nationally, locally and in the wider constituency of the European community. That they may uphold the Biblical perspective of justice, mercy and the God given gift of freedom and liberty for all under the law.

The Bible says “Righteousness upholds a nation” and the command Jesus gave to his disciples “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ surely says it all!
