THREE Carmarthenshire sporting organisations have benefitted in the latest round of Sport Wales Community Chest awards.

Among those cashing in on the Sports Wales £16,380 share out were Llanelli Olympic Wrestling Club, £1,500; Ammanford AFC Junior Section, £1420 and Llanmiloe and district Community Association – £750.

The grant is administered locally by Carmarthenshire council’s leisure team who are developing a successful Active Communities Campaign county-wide.

Chairman of Llanelli Wrestling Club Mathew Eynon said the cash injection would enable him to build on his club’s 15 strong membership achieved in the last two years.

Based at the Dafen Industrial Estate Mr Eynon said: “The money will go towards extra deep mats that will allow me to encourage 8 to 15-years to take up the sport. There has been tremendous interest from the youngsters but unfortunately until I have the special mats I have not been able to allow them membership.”

This fulfils the objective of the grant in providing funding towards activities that encourage more people to be more active, more often and to raise the standards of existing activities. The Community Chest grant supports projects that expands it’s current provision or introduces a new age group, increases coaches engaged or improves the quality of existing coaches.

Organisations can also apply for a second project that enables them to cater for interest generated via the 2014 Commonwealth Games; preparing for demand leading up to Glasgow 2014 and beyond and tackling inequality.

Applications are encouraged from the above groups and panels meet throughout the year. The next closing date for applications is Wednesday, June 4th.
