South Wales Police are warning the public that scammers have been contacting people pretending to be from BT using an email scam masquerading as a message from the telephone company.
Officers from Bridgend are advising people that fraudsters have been contacting residents via email pretending to be from BT. The email claims that a slight error in billing information has been detected and it encourages the recipient of the email to click on a link to update their billing information.
PCSO Carl Wesgate confirmed that the email looks like official correspondence from BT and includes their logo.
He said:
“It looks genuine and has the BT logo and states it is a security update. It outlines that your BT billing information needs confirming and that to ensure your service is not interrupted you need to click on the link on the bottom of the email.
“As with any email of this sort people should not respond and not give out their details.”
Deborah Elward, Crime Reduction Tactical Advisor, also commented:
“Scams come in many forms, over the phone, face to face, or via the internet. Often many will look official, but we urge everyone to check it out before responding. Scams change on a daily basis and we need to know about them so please do get in touch with us”.
