We received a letter to the Haunted Wales team on our Llanelli Town TV project from Lucy, a member of the public. Heres what it read…
It sounds quite odd to say but there is a stretch of road I’ve never really liked. It’s the one situated between Pwll and Burry Port, with trees both sides and often a burger van in the lay by. The stretch that is set at a 40mph speed limit is often referred to by most locals as ‘Moreb’. I’ve always thought that road to be eerie, even as I child I used to try and distract myself and think about something else as I was driven along that stretch.
Over the years I’d gone from Burry Port through to Llanelli via Moreb road more times that I could even begin to count, but I’d had long since perfected the art of ignoring it as passed by. I only really began to pay much attention to the road when I passed my driving test. I drove along there on my own for the first time and for some reason I instinctively locked the doors.
I only noticed what I had done and remembered doing it when I’d parked up and realised I had to unlock the doors to get out. I called myself paranoid and just got on with it, it’s not like it was a road I could avoid as I needed to pass though it almost daily to get to and from work. Still, each time I approached it I’d find my elbow reaching back and locking the doors before I even knew what I was doing.
It was in recent years where though the influence of my friends I began to find my spiritual side and started to suspect that there was something of a supernatural nature there on Moreb. However, if you look up the history of that road I don’t believe find a particularly unusual number of car crashes on there, though there have definitely been a few. So it baffles me as to why even when driving though there in the middle of a sunny day I find myself closing the windows and locking the doors before I know what I’ve done.
There was a time I was driving in Pwll last winter when it had started to rain, only a slight drizzle. Though as soon as I’d come level with that 40mph sign and entered Moreb it very suddenly started to rain heavier than I’d seen in such a long time, then at the very moment I reached the roundabout at the other end, the rain just stopped. It was back to a tiny drizzle. Sure, even I passed it off as a very bizarre conscience. But could it possibly have been more?
It was only a week or so ago that my gut feeling was, in my eyes, proved. It was very late at night when I was driving alone and got to that stretch. I’ve always tried to avoid driving though Moreb in the dark but this time it was completely unavoidable and I already had a knot like sensation in my stomach just at the thought. I was about half way though when I suddenly noticed a shadowy figure, with very big bright red eyes.
It was in the middle of the road almost level with my windscreen when it leapt to my attention. I jumped with fright, swerving the car with shock. It was lucky I was the only car on the road at the time. I didn’t dare look back and couldn’t get away from there fast enough. So now I’ve certainly realised that that instinct to close the car windows and lock the doors is somewhat of a warning.
I think it is definitely something worthy of Haunted Wales to look into, and I’m interested to know … Does anyone else hate driving along Moreb?
