The nominations for this year’s Llanelli Star community awards reminds us of those who through their service and devotion have helped improve the lives of others and are an inspiration to us all.
Their awards highlight the great debt we owe to them and to others who give of their time and talents freely and willingly for the sake of others. I have lost count in my ministry of how many times an elderly person has praised neighbors who ‘keep an eye’ and by simple acts like shopping or taking in a meal occasion all have made all the difference to those who are lonely and vulnerable.
It’s also true that community services like ‘Meals on wheels’, the talking Newsletter for the blind, the local hospice and many other good causes rely on those of good will who give uncomplainingly and willingly of their time and effort.
Being a good friend or neighbour is, of course, central to the teachings of Jesus . The ‘Good Samaritan’ is perhaps the best known of all. A traveler who went out of his way and ensured that the needs of the man who had been left for dead on the wayside was fully cared for. It is often said that our society has become impersonal and uncaring. The many volunteers involved in many facets of care prove that assumption wrong!
As a community we salute those who like the Good Samaritan do not pass by on the other side, but seek the opportunity to be good neighbours in the giving of their time and compassion. Jesus ends the parable of the Good Samaritan with a real challenge ‘Go and do likewise’ Thank God for those who do just that !
