Another summer, another opportunity for someone to win a construction apprenticeship through the Next Steps programme – only this year the chances are doubled.

Carmarthenshire County Council, Coleg Sir Gâr and Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association Ltd (CCTAL) are preparing to launch the fifth annual Next Steps competition where anyone from Carmarthenshire of working age has the chance to fast-track their career in a construction trade.

But this year, Ammanford-based firm TRJ Ltd is coming on board alongside competition stalwarts Lloyd & Gravell Ltd, so that at least two apprenticeships will be up for grabs. Linking in with a new Skills Academy programme funded through the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the TRJ apprenticeship will be in civil construction, concentrating on grounds work, whilst Lloyd & Gravell is looking for an apprentice hoping to qualify as a plasterer.

The candidates will be working on live construction projects and will also be taking part in challenges linked to the National Eisteddfod, which Carmarthenshire is hosting in Llanelli during August.

Owain Jones, Director at TRJ Ltd, said: “We’re thrilled to be on board and look forward to meeting people who want to become one of our apprentices.”

Entries for the competition are now open. Further information is available online at www.nextstepscarmarthenshire.co.uk
