CARMARTHEN Leisure Centre is joining in a national campaign promoting water safety in national drowning prevention week.

Centre duty manager James Levett said: “Carmarthen Leisure Centre takes great pride in our excellent water safety record and our long standing history for producing qualified Lifeguards through our in-house courses.”

Around 400 people drown in the UK every year and the Royal Life Saving Society UK aims to prevent drowning through water safety education.

Carmarthen Leisure Centre is helping to promote and support the drowning prevention society and create water safety awareness to all through their learn to swim scheme and with the general public next week.

County executive board member for leisure services Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “The role the county plays may be a small part in the greater scheme of things but it essential we raise awareness.

“When you know that the third highest cause of death to children worldwide each year is from drowning it just highlights how essential our lifeguards are and how important it is to maintain standards across the authority and maintain the ongoing training.”

The centre will be running fun games and producing literature to support their drive on water safety as well delivering swimming lessons in the week.
