The garden at Waddle’s Court sheltered housing scheme in Llanelli has had an impressive makeover, thanks to the help of year nine pupils of the nearby Coedcae School.
The project was arranged by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Community Engagement Team, which is part of the housing department.
Community Engagement Officer Pat Evans works closely alongside Coedcae’s Welsh Baccalaureate students in finding community projects where they can gain the necessary skills to complete their studies, whilst recognising the environmental needs within their own communities.
Their hard work means that members of the tenants’ group ‘The Waddlers Club’ are now able to plant flowers and vegetables for everyone to enjoy.
Chair of the group, Glyn Vale, said: “We’ve got a vegetable plot, and some runner beans, as well as raised planters. We’ve been doing dome digging and tidying up, but the Coedcae pupils have done most of the hard work.”
The project was supported by Asda’s Community Life scheme.
Simon Evans, Asda’s community link, said: “Pat asked us to support the Waddlers Club by donating gardening equipment as part of our community initiative, and we were very pleased to help.”
Local member Cllr Jeff Owen, added: “It’s nice to see young people learning some life skills – they’ve done a great job.”
