The Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway will be holding a Summer Gala on Saturday 31st August at its Cynheidre base. There will be lots of fun activities for people of all ages. Highlights will include:
- Train rides on the veranda of a goods brake van hauled by our Sentinel diesel 10222 over a recently extended running line
- Static display of our new locomotive, local celebrity 08 shunter No. 08 795 recently transferred from Landore depot in Swansea and now permanently preserved at the L&MMR. We hope to fire the loco up at lunch time today!
- Special freight train to photograph at the start of the day
- A quiz for children to take part in by searching for clues to the questions on their trail sheet, with a small prize on completion
- A guided Nature trail in association with Carmarthenshire Wildlife Walks
- Three playground rides for children to enjoy
- Re-live history with our display of 3 dimensional models by a local individual
- The opportunity to purchase tea coffee and snacks in our buffet, plus today a selection of real ales from the local Felinfoel brewery
- Opportunities to view the rest of the railways fleet which is under restoration on site
It is hoped to kick start the day with a demonstration freight train at 10.15am, before offering brake van rides with our popular Sentinel diesel loco between 10.45am and 4pm. Local celebrity shunter No. 08 795 will be posed outside for photography throughout the day and, subject to our restoration plans going to schedule, it is proposed to fire up the 08 for the first time in preservation at some point during the day. There will also be a real ale bar offering a selection of ales from the local Felinfoel Brewery.
The railway’s other rolling stock including Class 122 Diesel Unit No. 55019 will also be available to view and there will be access to the main stock sheds and Heritage centre. The nature trail and picnic areas will also be available with a guided walk at 11.30am The buffet car will be open for the sale of refreshments. Fares £4 Adult, £3 child/senior, £10 family (2 adults and 2 children). Tickets are all day rovers.
