Cefn Sidan beach, at Pembrey Country Park, on a Saturday morning (28th June) played host to the first in a series of pre-season Super Saturdays for the Scarlets.
With training now well underway and the squad being put through their paces at Parc y Scarlets the squad will be set different challenges in a series of Super Saturdays to test their mental and physical toughness and agility.
Amongst those training at Cefn Sidan beach today were some of the regions summer signings including Rory Pitman and returning Scarlets favourite Regan King.
Additional new signings, including number 8 Chris Hala’ufia, will join the squad later next week with senior internationals and Under 20 representatives enjoying a belated break.
Scarlets Skills Coach Mark Jones was present at Cefn Sidan this morning as the squad was put through a beach session, he said: “These sessions are more about pushing them to their limits mentally than anything else. They’re put through their paces in the more traditional way in the week.
“Adding different elements like today’s beach session to their schedule keeps things fresh and keeps their minds active. They’re not given much notice ahead of our Super Saturday sessions so they never know what’s on the horizon.
“Teamwork is key and they have to keep each other motivated through beach runs and a swim in the sea at 8.30am on a Saturday morning!”
Looking ahead to the new season Jones went on to say: “We’ve had a good few weeks of early pre-season with a core group and we’re looking forward to welcoming the new faces into the group and the return of the internationals over the next few weeks.”
