Councillors in Neath Port Talbot are due to consider a report to review the options of keeping Trem y Glyn residential care home open post 2022.
The Glynneath care home provides residential care and support for up to 30 people aged 65 and older, including people with dementia. The home is managed by Pobl (formerly Gwalia) on behalf of Neath Port Talbot Council.
A report to the Social Services, Health and Wellbeing Cabinet Board on Thursday 5th September is recommending that the Council works with the provider to undertake a feasibility study into the potential for Trem Y Glyn Residential Care Home to remain open post 2022.
The original plan was to close the care home on the 31st March 2022 following contract re-negotiations in 2017. This decision was based upon the need for additional works to be completed to modernise the home but mostly on a prediction that demand for residential care home beds would fall over the coming years.
A decision to review the planned closure of Trem y Glyn was due to take place in 2020. However, occupancy rates at Trem y Glyn remain high and future predictions are that demand for residential beds is unlikely to diminish over the coming decade. Therefore, given the demand for beds and the need for certainty for the residents and staff, officers recommend that this is resolved over the coming months.
Councillor Peter Richards, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Health, said:
āOne of the Councilās main priorities is to ensure there is enough high quality residential care placements to meet local need.
Ā āIf approved, the feasibility study into Trem y Glyn will give the Council the opportunity to consider the longer term options of providing care and support at the care homeā.
