A Roman Legion is visiting Carmarthenshire Museum for a family fun day this month.

The well known re-enactment group Leg II AVG will perform at the museum in Abergwili on Saturday, July 19, between 11am and 4pm.

Since its inception over 15 years ago, the legion’s military and civilian section has grown from strength to strength to become one of Europe’s pre-eminent Roman re-enactment groups.

Today its displays encompass the full range of military and civil life including soldiers, engineers, archers, gladiators and aristocratic ladies, plus an unrivalled collection of models and archaeologically accurate military equipment, musical instruments, household artefacts, and much more.

LEG II AVG are based on Legio II Augusta, the original Roman legion that controlled Carmarthen from its fortress in Caerleon 2,000 years ago.

People are invited to go along in fancy dress to add to the fun and activities which are part of the ‘Romans in Carmarthenshire’ project.

It is a CADW Heritage Tourism scheme which has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, and is being delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council, the National Trust and Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.

Heritage executive board member Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “This is an opportunity to see a Roman re-enactment group in action.

“People can also see the many attractions and artefacts in our County Museum and have a great family day out.”
