A group of local farmers and scientists in the Croesgoch area of Pembrokeshire are exploring the opportunities for, and barriers to, the decarbonisation of the County.

The first step is to carry out a scoping study of the major relevant issues, including the most significant sources of CO2 and the most promising ways of dealing with them. One novel idea is to exploit the fact that some types of rock can react with and absorb CO2.

If this initial study shows promise, the next stage will be to work with the agriculture industry to see how some farmland in West Wales can be utilised as an enhanced carbon-sink by spreading powdered rock on to it.

Considerable interest in the project has already been shown by Swansea University. Cris Tomos of PLANED has been supporting the group to become registered as a Community Benefit Society and to issue shares to people who wish to support the work.

Cris explained: “The concept is very interesting and the medium-term aim is to show how much carbon can be captured by the spreading the powdered rock on agricultural land and that it will not adversely affect any livestock or crops.

“The meeting in Croesgoch will allow the formation of a new cooperative. The proposed name of Awyr Lân, which is Welsh for Clean Air, has been chosen to reflect the efforts of people in Pembrokeshire to address the need to lower carbon levels in the atmosphere”, Cris added.

A public meeting is scheduled for the 26th of September at Croesgoch Primary School, starting at 7 p.m. It will be an open meeting to which all are welcome to come along and hear about this initiative.

Datgarboneiddio’r sir

Mae grŵp o ffermwyr a gwyddonwyr lleol yn ardal Croesgoch yn Sir Benfro yn archwilio’r cyfleoedd ar gyfer datgarboneiddio’r Sir, a’r rhwystrau iddi.
Y cam cyntaf yw cynnal astudiaeth gwmpasu o’r prif faterion perthnasol, gan gynnwys y ffynonellau CO2 mwyaf arwyddocaol a’r ffyrdd mwyaf addawol o ddelio â nhw.

Un syniad newydd yw manteisio ar y ffaith y gall rhai mathau o graig ymateb gyda CO2 a’i amsugno.

Os yw’r astudiaeth gychwynnol hon yn dangos addewid, y cam nesaf fydd gweithio gyda’r diwydiant amaeth i weld sut y gellir defnyddio rhywfaint o dir fferm yng Ngorllewin Cymru fel sinc carbon gwell.

Mae diddordeb sylweddol wedi cael ei ddangos eisoes gan Brifysgol Abertawe i fod yn rhan o’r cam ymchwil o’r prosiect. Mae Cris Tomos o PLANED wedi bod yn cefnogi’r grŵp i ddod yn gofrestredig fel cymdeithas budd cymunedol a dyroddi cyfranddaliadau i bobl sy’n dymuno cefnogi’r cynllun.

Eglurodd Cris “Mae’r cysyniad yn fenter ddiddorol iawn a gobeithio gall y grŵp ddangos faint o garbon y gellir ei ddal gan ledaenu’r pelenni carreg ar dir amaethyddol a sut nad yw’n effeithio ar unrhyw dda byw na chnydau.

“Bydd y cyfarfod yng Nghroes-goch yn caniatáu ffurfio cwmni cydweithredol newydd a’r enw arfaethedig o Awyr Lân, sef y Gymraeg ar gyfer Clean Air a bydd yn adlewyrchu ymdrechion pobl yn Sir Benfro i fynd i’r afael â’r angen i leihau lefelau carbon yn yr atmosffer.” Ychwanegodd Cris.

Mae’r prosiect cymunedol yn dymuno cofrestru Cwmni Buddiant Cymunedol newydd ac mae cyfarfod cyhoeddus wedi’i drefnu ar gyfer 26 Medi yn Ysgol Gynradd Croes-goch am 7pm.

Mae’n gyfarfod agored lle mae croeso i bawb ddod i glywed am y fenter newydd.
