The “Building Our Heritage” bursary scheme will give 30 trainees the opportunity to gain an NVQ3 in Heritage Building Skills across Wales.
Funding for the Building our Heritage Scheme has been secured by the Tywi Centre in Llandeilo through a £769,400 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the £161,250 from Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
The scheme is led by Carmarthenshire County Council and is supported by the National Trust. The Tywi Centre will work in partnership with The Natural Building Centre in North Wales to deliver the project.
Nell Hellier, Manager of the Tywi Centre, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people interested in historic buildings to gain qualifications and experience working with different craftspeople across Wales.
“I’d urge anyone with a passion for old buildings and with an interest in heritage carpentry, lime plastering or stone masonry to contact The Tywi Centre as soon as possible as the closing date for applications is July 25th 2014.”
Applicants must have 4 years’ experience in the building industry or have gained an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent already.
Helena Burke, Heritage Bursary Officer, added: “The new round of funding will also enable us to develop and deliver a training course specifically for women interested in following a career in Heritage construction.”
Since 2011, the Tywi Centre has supported 50 people through the Heritage Bursary Programme which was also funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Past students have enjoyed the experience of working on some of the most interesting and beautiful buildings in Wales and being trained by experts in their field.
Jennifer Stewart, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in Wales, said: “Looking after heritage requires a range of unique skills, many of which are now very scarce. This is why we support projects such as this which not only preserve the techniques but also gives people opportunities to develop new areas of expertise.”
