Llanelli’s Assembly Member, Lee Waters, has expressed disappointment with Barclays Bank following the announcement that they are to stop their customers from making cash withdrawals at Post Office branches.
The move by Barclays is planned to hit customers from January 8th next year.
Currently, the 930 Post Office branches in Wales provide everyday banking services for individuals and businesses, such as cash deposits, cash withdrawals and bill payments.
Lee Waters, also Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport in the Welsh Government, said:
“I am disappointed that Barclays is stopping its customers from making cash withdrawals in Post Offices from next January.”
“ A local Post Office is often at the heart of our communities, and consequently provides vital services for residents. This is particularly true in communities, such as the more rural locations of Wales, where banks have closed. I can think of towns and villages in my constituency, such as Burry Port and Kidwelly, where this is going to detrimentally effect people.”
Barclays Bank will continue to allow customers to deposit cash, cheques and access change and balance enquiries at Post Office branches, but Lee Waters AM added:
“It is very poor of Barclays to stop cash withdrawals. Thankfully, other banks are not being so short-sighted.”
