A dangerous overreaction

The government wants to make it harder to vote in elections by forcing people to produce ID that not everyone has. [1] A law like this could stop hundreds of thousands of people voting, and with a knife-edge election on the horizon, it could change the future of our country. [2]

The government announced this new law on Monday. [3] But they have no majority in parliament – and that means a huge public backlash could stop the law in its tracks and force MPs to throw the proposal out. [4]

So here’s the plan. We’re going to show this government that the public won’t accept laws that threaten people’s right to vote. Imagine if 100,000 of us signed a petition today – just days after these plans were announced. Together we could prove to the government that the public won’t stand for attacks on our democracy.

There are lots of reasons that you might not have ID. Maybe you don’t drive or travel. Or money’s too tight to pay the fee required to get a driver’s licence or passport. Maybe you just left it at home! But these are not reasons to take away your right to vote.

The government says these laws are needed to stop fraud. [5] But in the last election year only one person was convicted of the type of fraud that voter IDs could prevent. [6] Experts say this law could stop hundreds of thousands of people from voting. [7] It’s a massive and dangerous overreaction.

You maybe have the ID you’d need to vote. But the beauty of 38 Degrees is that we believe everyone should be able to cast their votes – and when we see a government threatening that right, we all pile in to put a stop to it.
