Miraculous story of eight brothers who survived WWI

The story of eight Llanelli brothers who all survived the Great War features in an exhibition taking place at Llanelli Library.

Their heroic and remarkable tale is being told for the first time by the grandson of one of the soldiers, to commemorate the part they played in WWI.

Dennis Richards’ grandfather Glyn was one of the brothers who, against odds of millions and millions to one, and despite disease and capture, survived the war.

Their parents were Daniel Richards and Elizabeth Williams who married at Zion Baptist Chapel in 1881 and lived in Llewellyn Street.

Over the next 23 years they had 13 children –three girls and 10 boys, eight of whom signed up as soldiers.

Dennis has written a full piece on each of the brothers, including details of where they worked, where they lived, and their families.

All his information plus the photographs forms a major part of the event being held at the library from now until July 12.

Along with the story of the eight brothers, there will be a small exhibition of photographs, artefacts and newspaper reports to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

During this week staff will be on hand to digitise any photographs or items relating to the First World War that local people may wish to share.

Any digitised item will become a permanent part of the library’s local history collection which has been hailed as a fantastic resource for the local community and invaluable to local historians.
