Nia Griffith MP and Lee Waters AM have announced the winners of the annual competition to design their Christmas cards. Llanelli’s MP and AM received a number of high-quality entries from local schoolchildren on the theme of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’.
After careful consideration, the judges decided that the design by Liwsi May Davies from Ysgol Gymraeg Gwenllian was the winner of the infant category and Lewis Dylan Thomas from Ysgol Gynradd Llannon had won the junior category.
Their designs will be featured on the MP’s and AM’s Christmas cards, along with a number of runner-up entries, and framed copies will be given to the pupils who made them and to their schools. The schools will also receive a cash prize courtesy of the Llanelli-based Parker Plant Hire, which has once again sponsored the competition.
The runners-up in the infant category are Morgan MacFayden from Old Road School and Cady Harrison, Vincent Lloyd and Dexter Thomas from Swiss Valley Primary School. The junior runners-up were Ava Beau Williams Rogers from Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel, Jac Morgan from Swiss Valley Primary School, and Catherine Johnson and Kyle Lloyd from Ysgol Y Felin.
Many of the designs will be displayed at Llanelly House from Tuesday 3rd December through till Christmas, open for all to see. Whilst not every picture can be there, the display at Llanelly House will feature the winning entries and a selection of the others.
The difficult job of judging the competition was undertaken by local artist Richard Gravelle, retired Primary School Headteacher Elizabeth Parker MBE and Lee Turnell, a graphic designer.
Nia Griffith MP said: “Lee and I were overwhelmed by the high quality of entries for this year’s Christmas card competition…. I know the judges had a very difficult time picking the winners! Congratulations to Liwsi May Davies and Lewis Dylan Thomas for winning the competition, for their really eye-catching designs.
“I would like to thank all the schools who took part and every student who sent in their design. Unfortunately not every entry can be featured in Llanelly House, but many of the designs will be on display and I would encourage everyone to visit.”
“Thanks also to the judges for volunteering their time and George Parker for sponsoring the competition for another year running.”
Lee Waters AM added: “Every year I am impressed by the standard of entries from the children! As always, they have created imaginatively festive cards to an incredibly high standard.
“Many of these excellent designs will be on display in Llanelly House and I would encourage everyone to visit and celebrate the talents of our youngsters – they will definitely put you in the Christmas mood.”
The annual MP/AM Christmas card competition was open to all primary schools in the Llanelli constituency. Nia and Lee received several hundred entries from local school children.
