This Saturday, 9th November, West Wales will be bringing a top cross-country competition back to Llanelli.

The John Collins Gwent Cross Country League – formed in 1963 has continued across South Wales and South West England every year since then and attracts the best cross-country runners from Wales and England.

This will be the second of five league meetings following the opening round at Cardiff in mid-October. This weekend’s competition at Pembrey Country Park is an ideal location for runners with stunning views across the Gower.

It has been transferred into one of Wales’ top visitor attractions providing an unique blend of coast and countryside, with eight-miles of golden sands and comprises acres of grassland and woodland adjacent to Cefn Sidan Beach. Also there’s a spectacular backdrop of the Gower overlooking the coastal scenery of Carmarthen Bay.

It is being hosted by the local Carmarthen Harriers Athletics Club in conjunction with Carmarthen County Council. The race will incorporate the West Wales Cross Country Championships, with medals at stake for the first three West Walians to cross the line in the under 13 to senior age groups.

For many, this will be the second visit to Pembrey in a matter of months, with the Welsh Athletics Road Relays Championships having taken place around the new closed cycling circuit in the park less than two months ago.

The course will be a mixture of flat parkland, forest trails, man-made hills and sand. It has been designed to be accessible for all runners of all speeds and abilities.

Saturday’s 10-race programme of events will get underway with the Under 11 Girls at 11.30am and will be followed by Under 11 Boys and Under 13 age groups. It concludes in the afternoon with the Senior Men & Masters Men race, with the starting gun expected to set them off at approximately 2.35pm. Everyone is welcome to come to support the competitors and enjoy the race day atmosphere.

2019/2020 season began at Llandaff Fields in Cardiff on Saturday 12th October in conjunction with the first British Athletics Cross Challenge Series where there were some great races and big fields in the senior’s in particular.

Blaise Castle, Bristol, Chepstow Racecourse and Singleton Park in Swansea will also see the league visit in December to March respectively.
