Swansea shoppers will have a clear Kingsway this Christmas.
Engineering and landscaping works to create expanded pedestrian areas have been cleared of construction equipment for around two months.
This will allow clear access for pedestrians, motorists, public transport and commercial traffic.
Phil Holmes, Swansea Council’s head of planning and city regeneration, said: “The city centre will be as accessible as possible, with The Kingsway being an obstacle-free route to and from our local shops and businesses. Orchard Street will also have fewer obstacles.”
The Kingsway scheme is due to be completed in spring 2020.
Russell Greenslade, chief executive of Swansea Business Improvement District (BID) which represents more than 870 businesses, said the Christmas period was a vital time of year for the city centre.
He said: “We encourage shoppers to support our city centre businesses; they employ thousands of people who, in turn, support the communities they live in.
“The city centre has a great mix of local and national retail, leisure and food and drink offerings and they’re eager to offer residents and visitors a great Christmas.”
The Kingsway changes will incorporate new public areas, landscaped parkland and footways and cycle routes.
Many footways are well advanced and the area already has new street trees and greenery. Some temporary grass has been laid for the festive period, before the final construction of raised planters in the new year.
Roadworks will be suspended on The Kingsway project from November 16 to early January.
