Latest polls in the Scottish independence referendum saw a surprising change last weekend. A convincing lead in the No camp had all but disappeared and gave the ‘Yes’ campaign the lead.
Now in this last week both sides will be giving of their all to ensure that they get their message across. Unlike the referendums held to empower devolution from central government and which gave us our Assembly in Wales and the people of Scotland and Northern Ireland their Parliaments this time the people of Scotland will make a decision that is irreversible and the possibility of making their nation a separate sovereign country.
Now decision time is nearly here and every vote will, no doubt, reflect a decision that has listened to all the arguments, weighed both options, and have come to a conclusion which, of course, is the essence of our democracy. Whatever the outcome whether it is that Scotland remains part of the united kingdom or becomes an independent nation the hope is that both sides will accept the majority will and work together to ensure that this great nation goes forward in unity, as always ‘Scotland the brave!’
It was Winston Churchill who said that democracy was not perfect but that it’s the best we have. Surely he was right, as in this referendum and in all elections we have the right to make our own decisions. It’s the same as far as faith is concerned. The Bible gives us much evidence of God’s dealing with humankind and from the very beginning there is enshrined in God’s Word the freewill we have to live by faith or not. There is, however, much to help us make that choice. A way of life based on love and compassion to others which Jesus spoke of in the Sermon on the Mount; giving us the most powerful and dynamic manifesto on which to base our lives.
Such commands as going the second mile and resisting violence and retribution, of turning the other cheek, loving our enemies and giving to those in need. Indeed to decide to belong to the Kingdom of God which knows no territorial confines but welcome all who by faith make the decision to follow the Christ who lived died and arose again.
‘Thy Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven!’
