Work on the £25.2 million obstetric and neonatal facilities project at Glangwili Hospital is progressing well having reached some key construction milestones.
This second phase of the redevelopment project will improve facilities for mums, babies and families at the hospital. The scheme includes high dependency cots, special care cots and parent accommodation, as well as birthing rooms and operating theatres. Plans are also in place for additional staff car parking spaces.
The plans will provide a modern environment for the delivery of obstetric and neonatal services at Glangwili Hospital.
Construction works to create a new Labour Ward, located next to the main entrance, are now complete and in January, the Special Care Baby Unit will temporarily move into this area whilst refurbishment is underway to transform their existing space into a new improved unit. This will provide a significant improvement for babies, families and staff until the new permanent unit is available later next year.
Keith Jones, Director of Secondary Care, Hywel Dda University Health Board said: “To enable these necessary works to take place, the Special Care Baby Unit will be temporarily relocated to the newly constructed labour ward, this is just around the corner from our current location and this move will take place on 7 January 2020.
“We wish to reassure people that disruption will be kept to a minimum and local arrangements are being made to ensure families, visitors, our staff and external agencies are kept informed of progress.”
Through the planning phase, staff and service users have been encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas on aspects such as colour schemes and equipment including design themes, wall coverings, floor finishes and furnishings for their new permanent unit.
We wish to reassure patients and visitors that services will continue as normal during the period of these improvements.
Progress updates will be communicated throughout the project.
