Project officer appointed for the Llanelli Railway Goods Shed Trust project

The Llanelli Railway Goods Shed Trust has appointed a project officer to help take plans for the Grade II listed building to the next stage.

Robert Lloyd has been appointed to the temporary post of project officer and started working for the trust earlier this month.

The project aims to redevelop the derelict goods shed and adjoining land and old offices to create a new facility which will be of great benefit to the local community.

Plans for the site near Llanelli Railway Station include a community hub, arts centre, workshops, offices, café and heritage centre.

Llanelli MP Nia Griffith, who chairs the trust, said: ” I am absolutely delighted that Robert Lloyd has agreed to take on the job of project officer for the former goods shed.

“We had a very strong field of candidates to choose from, and I have every confidence that Robert’s wealth of experience and his immediate grasp of the challenges we face will be a real boost to helping us get the goods shed restored of as a valuable centre for the community.

‘The project is in its initial phases, but the aim is to redevelop the now derelict building near Llanelli station and produce a facility which will be of great benefit to the local community.”

Mr Lloyd, 55, is a former editor of the Llanelli Star and Carmarthen Journal newspapers and former deputy editor of the South Wales Evening Post.

He runs his own press, public relations and marketing consultancy. The chairman of the Llanelli Talking Newspaper for the Blind, he is a trustee of Age Cymru Sir Gar and a past president of Llanelli Rotary Club.

He said: “I am delighted to be joining the trust team as we try to move the project forward to the next stage.

”An application has been made to the Heritage Lottery Fund and we are hoping to raise sufficient funds to progress the project.

“The involvement of the local community is crucial and the trust values any comments and suggestions on the future use of the site.
