Neath Port Talbot Council is making a personal alarm system available to residents of Briton Ferry and Melin as part of a pilot to test demand for the service.

LifeLink connects to a 24-hour monitoring centre via a button worn around the neck or on the wrist. On pressing the button, the wearer can speak to a member of the monitoring centre team who is trained to deal with emergency situations quickly and confidently. They will call a named contact or the emergency services, depending on the situation.

The system supports independent living and offers peace of mind for people of any age. It is particularly helpful for those at risk of a fall linked to disability or medical conditions such as heart problems, arthritis, high blood pressure and osteoporosis. Prices start from just £2.70 a week, and there is no need for a social services assessment.

There are two levels of service available. LifeLink includes 24-hour access to the monitoring centre using the personal alarm. Lifelink Plus also comes with up to four sensors in the home for additional reassurance. These include smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, heat sensors and up to three Magiplugs, which protect against a bath or sink overflowing and reduce the risk of scalding.

The offer is currently only available to residents of the Briton Ferry and Melin areas and the pilot will close at the end of February.
