“Regional Rugby Wales and the Four Welsh Regions would like to express their great sadness at this morning’s news that former Scarlets and Regional Rugby Wales Chief Executive Stuart Gallacher has died.

“The Regions are united in reflecting respectfully and quietly on Stuart’s huge contribution to the game that has spanned more than 40 years in Welsh and European Rugby – as an influential player, Chief Executive and Director.

“Recognised and respected as one of the game’s most influential figures during a huge period of change in professional rugby, Stuart Gallacher’s career included heading his beloved Llanelli RFC and the Scarlets for 13 years, overseeing the transition to professionalism, the shift to regional rugby across Wales and the move from Stradey Park. His tenure at the Scarlets helm included three Heineken Cup semi-finals for the Scarlets, a Celtic league title and an EDF Energy Cup final appearance.

“His knowledge, extensive experience and connections on the world rugby stage have come from a career that has included commitments as chairman of Llanelli RFC, CEO of Llanelli RFC, a board member of ERC and Chairman of the ERC Rugby sub-committee for five years, a board member of Celtic Rugby, committee member of LV=Cup and WRU board member as well as leading the Regions as CEO of Regional Rugby Wales for five years from 2009.

“His contribution has been immense for Welsh Rugby – his stature, commitment and determination to fight for what he believed to be right for Welsh Rugby at all levels throughout difficult times was never compromised.

“He has always been a true “rugby man” and for that his standing and respect in the Rugby World will be recognised from the many tributes that will undoubtedly be given publicly in coming days, weeks and months.

“Whilst fighting a brave and determined battle against serious illness in recent times, Stuart’s passing is a time of great shock and grief for his family and close friends.

“Alongside his passion and love of rugby, Stuart was a great family man and RRW and the Four Regions pass on their sincere condolences and support to his devoted and supportive wife Jan and his family at this difficult time.

“RRW would respectfully ask that Stuart’s family are given due respect and privacy at this sad time.

“As a mark of respect, Stuart’s home region, the Scarlets will wear black armbands at their European game against Toulon and there will also be a minute’s silence at the Ospreys match against Treviso at the Liberty stadium this afternoon. EPCR has requested that a minute’s silence be observed at all matches in the European Rugby Champions Cup and Challenge Cup games held today (Sunday).

“Further personal tributes from the Regions’ Chairmen and leaders will come in due course at an appropriate time.

“Stuart Gallacher has given so much to our game – a remarkable player, man, celebrated administrator and great and valued friend to many throughout regional rugby. He is respected, trusted and held in the highest esteem throughout the rugby world and his contribution over such a significant period in Welsh Rugby will be difficult for anyone to match.”
