An open day will be held at the Tywi Centre, Llandeilo to launch a new and exciting project aimed at introducing women to the Heritage Construction Industry.
Anyone interested in finding out more about the scheme is invited to the Tywi Centre on Saturday December 6 at 10am until 4pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to try their hand at stonemasonry, lime plastering and carpentry and meet people who are already working in the industry.
The Women in Heritage Construction Training scheme will give 10 women trainees the opportunity to learn building skills whilst receiving a Bursary Payment of £5,575. Funding for the Building our Heritage Scheme has been secured by the Tywi Centre through a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The scheme is led by Carmarthenshire County Council and is supported by the National Trust.
Nell Hellier, Manager of the Tywi Centre commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity for women interested in historic buildings to start laying foundations for a future career in heritage building. I’d urge Women with an interest in old buildings, a passion for learning new skills, and a commitment to working on practical projects to contact the Tywi Centre as soon as possible as the closing date for applications is December 19 2015.”
Successful applicants will follow a 28 week course (4 days per week) and will receive a bursary payment of £5,575 for this period. The course will cover lime plastering, stonemasonry and carpentry and participants will have the opportunity to visit exciting heritage projects and to work on a live project. They will also follow health and safety courses, business and careers development training and receive guidance which will help to build confidence and prepare them for working in the construction industry. The scheme will begin in February 2015.
The aim of the scheme is to address the shortage of women represented within the construction industry and to address the current skills gap within the heritage construction sector.
