Given clear skies, there will be a host of heavenly bodies on display at the National Botanic Garden of Wales ‘Star Party’ later this month.
You could see the Andromeda Galaxy, the Moon, the Pleiades and many other fascinating stellar objects on Friday November 28, when the Swansea Astronomical Society host the latest Botanic Garden ‘Stargazing event, from 6pm until 9pm. All the action takes place in and around the Great Glasshouse – bring your own ‘scopes as well, especially if you want help and advice.
Inside Lord Foster’s world-famous dome, there will be two talks on the subject of All about Rosetta (and other comets). These will tell you all you need to know about comets and asteroids as well as giving you the latest information on how the lander craft ‘Philae’ is getting on, and maybe some spectacular photos. The talks start at 6.20pm and will be repeated later.
Says society member Colin Miles: “This landing on a comet is being billed as one of the great space feats, on a par with landing on the Moon. The hope is that the results of any experiments the craft is able to perform and the information sent back will gives us insights into the evolution of the Solar System, where Earth’s water came from and perhaps even the origins of life itself.”
Access is via the Corporate back entrance, admission £3 adults, under 16s free. Refreshments available.
