Plaid peer Lord Dafydd Wigley will today (Tuesday) use a questions session in the House of Lords to make the case for Wales to have the same power as Scotland over fracking.
Lord Wigley, who has long warned of the environmental and safety dangers of fracking, will say that the Welsh Government should be granted power to veto any fracking projects in Wales that may be harmful to the Welsh environment or pose a threat to public health and safety, for example, the contamination of water supplies.
Speaking ahead of the questions session, Lord Wigley said:
“My aim is to use today’s questions session to make the case for Wales to have the same power as Scotland over fracking that would allow the Welsh Government to block fracking projects as it sees fit.
“I have long warned of the potential dangers of fracking – both to the environment and public health and safety.
“It has also been revealed as a result of parliamentary questions submitted by Plaid Cymru that fracking projects in England may require a huge transfer of water from Wales in order for these projects to go ahead.
“I hope that the Government honours this simple principle that what’s good enough for Scotland is good enough for Wales and I look forward to their response.”
