Leanne Wood calls for alternative to austerity! The UK Government’s austerity agenda has failed and must be replaced by a programme of rebalancing wealth and power. That was the message from the Party of Wales leader Leanne Wood on the eve of the UK Government’s Autumn Statement.

Despite five years of austerity, Leanne Wood said, the UK Government has failed to meet most of its financial objectives, and the UK’s financial deficit is worse than any other European nation bar one.

The party leader said that Wales must have parity of powers and resources with Scotland, arguing should be allowed to take greater responsibility for its economic affairs in order to grow the economy and build prosperity.

The Party of Wales leader Leanne Wood said:

“Westminster cannot be trusted with its hands on Wales’ economic levers.

“Our historic economic under-performance since de-industrialisation rest with successive Westminster governments refusing to address Wales’ economic and social needs.

“That’s why Plaid Cymru has an approach which includes Wales taking greater responsibility for its economic affairs – because we can see Westminster has failed us.

“And it’s why we’re calling for a levelling out of the playing field – that Wales should be funded on the basis of equality.”
