Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service respond to grass fires in Swansea area

On Monday, 23/03/2020 at 04:19pm, crews from Swansea West and Swansea Central attended a deliberate grass fire, involving 5 hectares of land, on Kilvey Hill.

The initial calls for this grass fire were made at the same time as a kitchen fire in the Swansea area, posing the risk of a delayed response from the Fire and Rescue Service.

Attending Firefighters fought the fire using beaters and left the incident at 09:11pm.

On Monday 23/03/2020 at 08:43pm, firefighters from Morriston attended a deliberately lit fire in a field at Clos Ysgawen, Llansamlet.

The Fire Service fought the fire using beaters and left the incident at 10:12pm.

Richie Vaughan-Williams, Arson Reduction Manager, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said,

“Deliberately setting grass fires are illegal and irresponsible. They endanger lives within the local community, kill wildlife and use up the resources of the Fire and Rescue Service which could lead to a delay in attending a road traffic collision or a house fire.

We are all being asked to help our NHS by staying at home and prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Therefore, I would urge everyone to heed the Government’s advice and stay at home, observe social distancing and consider the public health implications of these fires during this already difficult time.

We would like to appeal to you to help us and other essential services in preventing these incidents from occurring.

If anybody has any information regarding these deliberately lit fires, please phone the Police on 101.”
