Keith Davies AM has applauded the £70,000 announced yesterday for a Llanelli project to promote Welsh Language in the town. It will go towards developing part of ‘Y Lle’ in Stepney Street. Mr Davies visited the centre during its start up phase last summer to discuss progress and future plans.

The funding is part of the Welsh Governments’ Language policy, BwrwMlaen, and the supporting Capital Investment Fund which was announced at the Llanelli Eisteddfod this summer.

Wales’ First Minister, Carwyn Jones AM, made the announcement on the same day he visited Llanelli’s Canolfan 13 ‘Y Lle’.

Local Social Enterprise, CF 13 Cyf, is developing the centre, called ‘Y Lle.’ Its appeal is wide – not just for those with high levels of Welsh language skills. It will contain numerous facilities and services – café, function rooms, offices, youth clubs and rehearsal studio’s – to name a few.

Carmarthenshire Council made the successful bid, which will develop a part of the building, and will be working alongside third sector partners.

Keith Davies AM said:

“I sincerely congratulate CF 13 Cyf on their new centre, ‘Y Lle’, and their offer to Welsh Language speakers and learners. I look forward to making a follow-up visit in the New Year to see for myself how it operates and the Welsh Language skills it is harnessing.”

“This funding is fantastic news for Welsh Language in Llanelli. Having hosted the Carmarthenshire Eisteddfod this August, I am extremely pleased that this can run alongside our legacy planning.”

“As Chair of the Cross Party Group on the Welsh Language, I chaired a meeting in the Senedd about the impact of Welsh Language Centres on their surrounding communities. Experts drew on best practice across Wales, and speakers pointed to the connection between the Language and a wider community – they go hand in hand.”

“Llanelli is already home to successful Language Organisations such as MenterIaithCwnGwendraeth Elli, who I also congratulate on last week winning almost £50,000 from The People’s Millions – a partnership between ITV and the Big Lottery Fund.”

“Not only does this Centre bring a boost for Welsh Language in Llanelli town, it also supports efforts to regenerate the town centre. Increasing footfall on the high street and building urban communities has been high on my priorities since I was elected.”
