More grassland management at Ynysdawela Nature Park

Ynysdawela NP is a Council-owned site near Brynamman made up mainly of woodland and grassland habitats. This less well-known site was created partly on a former colliery site and has developed into an important site for wildlife, including for two key species in the county –the marsh fritillary butterfly and dormouse.

This creates interesting issues when considering management of the site. The important grassland habitats have declined in quality due to bramble encroachment – smothering important habitat for the marsh fritillary but providing excellent extra habitat for dormice!

To manage the bramble, which is used by the dormice for food and shelter, a licence is required from Natural Resources Wales as this uncommon mammal is protected under British and European legislation. Any management must ensure that there is enough suitable habitat so that dormice can continue to thrive. As the site has a good amount of suitable dormouse habitat removal of small areas from the grassland at the right time of year will not harm the dormice but will definitely help the marsh fritillary. As previously reported after the management last winter, marsh fritillaries were recorded at Ynysdawela this summer for the first time in many years. This site forms a stepping stone habitat between the identified marsh fritillary metapopulation in the Cross Hands area and the Cwmgors and Tawe valley populations. In due course a management plan will be written to address the long-term management of the Nature Park.

In September brambles were cut back using brushcutters and loppers by rangers, Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers. The clearance was directional, i.e. working from less to more favourable habitat to encourage any dormice present to move in to suitable habitat .This cut material was then raked up and dumped in suitable areas to create habitat piles. All areas of bramble were checked by dormouse licence holders prior to management. One old rotting dormouse nest was found during this process. Significant strips of bramble along the field edge were retained.

Areas of the grass within the meadows were also cut and the mowing raked up by the hard working volunteers. This should encourage the grassland to flourish next summer – hopefully we will record even more marsh fritillaries then!

Rhagor o waith rheoli glaswelltiroedd yn digwydd ym Mharc Natur Ynysdawela

Safle ger Brynaman sy’n eiddo i’r Cyngor yw Parc Natur Ynysdawela ac mae ar ffurf coetiroedd a glaswelltiroedd yn bennaf. Crëwyd y safle’n rhannol ar hen waith glo ac er nad yw mor adnabyddus â safleoedd eraill mae’n llecyn pwysig i fywyd gwyllt, gan gynnwys dwy brif rywogaeth yn y sir – sef brithegion y gors a phathewod. Mae hyn yn codi materion diddorol wrth ystyried sut mae rheoli’r safle. Bu dirywiad o ran y cynefinoedd glaswelltir pwysig sydd yno wrth i fieri ennill tir – gan fygu cynefin pwysig i frithegion y gors, ac eto mae’r mieri hyn yn gynefin ychwanegol rhagorol i bathewod!

Er mwyn gallu cael trefn ar y mieri, a ddefnyddir fel mannau llochesu a bwydo gan y pathewod, mae’n rhaid cael trwydded gan Gyfoeth Naturiol Cymru gan fod y mamal prin hwn yn cael ei warchod gan ddeddfwriaeth Prydain ac Ewrop. Mae’n rhaid i unrhyw gamau rheoli sicrhau bod digon o gynefin addas ar gael fel bod y pathewod yn dal i ffynnu. Gan fod cynefin addas digonol i bathewod yn Ynysdawela, nid yw gwaredu mieri o lecynnau bychain ar yr adeg briodol o’r flwyddyn yn andwyol i’r pathewod ac yn bendant mae hyn o gymorth i frithegion y gors. Fel y cyhoeddwyd o’r blaen, yn sgil y gwaith rheoli yn ystod y gaeaf diwethaf cofnodwyd brithegion y gors yn Ynysdawela yn ystod yr haf eleni a hynny am y tro cyntaf ers blynyddoedd lawer. Mae’r safle hwn yn garreg sarn rhwng y fetaboblogaeth gydnabyddedig yng nghyffiniau Cross Hands a’r poblogaethau o frithegion y gors yng Nghwm-gors a Chwm Tawe. Bydd cynllun rheoli yn cael ei lunio maes o law gyda golwg ar roi sylw i reolaeth ar y Parc Natur yn y cyfnod hir.

Ym mis Medi bu’r parcmyn, staff yr Ymddiriedolaeth Natur a gwirfoddolwyr yn defnyddio strimwyr a thocwyr i gael trefn ar y mieri mewn mannau. Gwnaed y gwaith trasho mewn modd trefnus gan ddechrau mewn mannau llai ffafriol a gweithio tuag at gynefinoedd mwy ffafriol er mwyn cymell unrhyw bathewod oedd yn bresennol i symud i’r cynefin ffafriol. Yna rhacanwyd y trash a’i grynhoi mewn mannau addas i greu pentyrrau bywyd gwyllt. Cyn cychwyn ar y gwaith trasho archwiliwyd yr holl fieri gan ddalwyr trwydded pathewod. Yn ystod y gwaith chwilio hwn daethpwyd o hyd i un hen nyth lle bu pathewod ond a oedd yn pydru bellach. Cadwyd stribedi sylweddol o fieri ar hyd ymylon y cae.

Hefyd aeth y gwirfoddolwyr diflino ati i ladd y gwair mewn mannau yn y dolydd ac i’w racanu. Dylai hyn roi hwb i’r glaswelltir yr haf nesaf – a’r gobaith yw y bydd niferoedd brithegion y gors yn cynyddu!
