The first food parcels for vulnerable people shielding themselves due to the coronavirus have begun to be distributed across Neath Port Talbot.

The food parcels are part of Neath Port Talbot Council’s NPT Safe and Well service which has been set up in response to the coronavirus outbreak. The service arranges for volunteers to support vulnerable residents who have been told to shield themselves but don’t have any family, friends or neighbours to call on for help.

One of the services provided by NPT Safe and Well Service is a local delivery of food to eligible residents who have no other way of accessing food whilst they have to stay at home. The local food hub is being managed by council staff that have been redeployed to support this crucial front line services.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Rob Jones, said:

“It is vital that we have a service in place that is able to get vital supplies to those who are most vulnerable and have nobody to rely on for help.

“When the coronavirus first started to emerge, we reacted quickly to put the NPT Safe and Well service in place.

We have received more than 600 requests for support and have recruited more than 500 volunteers to provide people with support. We have also set up a food distribution centre for those who are extremely vulnerable and have no other way of accessing essential supplies.

“Our aim is to be here for people, and by working together, we can make this challenging and uncertain time a bit easier for everyone.”
