Welsh Labour Member of the Senedd, Eluned Morgan has said that people should not use sky lanterns to show their appreciation for key workers during the current Covid-19 pandemic.

The warning has been sparked after an online campaign called for people to show their support for front line NHS workers by letting off sky lanterns which are banned in Wales.

Instead, Eluned Morgan is encouraging people to show their appreciation by taking part in the weekly clap for carers on Thursday evenings at 8pm or by looking out for the next Sing For Wales doorstep sing-a-long  – a follow up to the event held last Monday evening where people from across Wales came together to sing the national anthem for those affected by Coronavirus.

Eluned Morgan said: “People rightly want to show their appreciation for hardworking key workers at this time of national crisis.  Doctors, nurses, carers, paramedics and shop assistants are working tirelessly to help others, putting themselves at greater risk of contracting the virus to help others.  So please show your support for our NHS – but not with sky lanterns”.

“We have seen the devastating impacts sky lanterns cause – causing fire and suffering to farm animals, wildlife and the environment.  They have been banned by all local councils in Wales for a very good reason, I am asking people to ignore online campaigns that encourage this activity.”

Time to reach out and help

Eluned Morgan has been encouraging volunteering during the current pandemic.  Across Mid and West Wales, thousands of people have stepped forward  to help others through the nationally co-ordinated Volunteering Wales service, county based volunteer schemes and brand new groups formed by community spirited individuals.

Eluned continued: “While normal life is paused to protect our NHS and save lives, I hope that we can all take the time to look out for our neighbours and to reconnect with our own communities. There are a variety of ways people can help right now, and from the safety of home or within their local area whist observing social distancing.  My office has been connecting people with volunteer opportunities, for more details visit my facebook page at www.facebook.com/ElunedMorgan
