Keith Davies AM has visited the John Davies pharmacy in Burry Port to raise awareness of the NHS ‘Choose Well’ campaign. The aim is to reduce inappropriate pressure on emergency departments by helping patients understand where best they should go when feeling unwell.
Winter is a busy time and the Welsh NHS, like health services across the UK, has experienced significant pressures. Community Pharmacists like “John the Chemist” as he is known locally are trained to provide a wide range of services with private consultation rooms available at his premises on Station Road in the town.
Recent surveys by Carmarthenshire Community Health Council at Prince Philip and Glangwili hospitals found that few patients were aware of the Wales-wide ‘Choose Well’ campaign. Keith Davies is backing efforts locally to encourage people here to choose well, especially over the winter season.
Keith Davies AM said:
“The Choose Well campaign is a great initiative giving patients direction on where to go for treatment for some of the most common ailments. Wales has not been immune to UK-wide pressures and it is imperative that patients help out by choosing wisely.”
“Visiting John the Chemist and his daughter Rachel who is fully trained Independent Prescriber, I learned of the breadth of services that community pharmacies can offer. I also discussed with John and Rachel about how health care is organised in Burry Port and some of their plans to expand local services which I will also be discussing with the Welsh Health Minister.” “What I want to see is Local Health Boards producing literature to put a local slant on a successful campaign. Ideas include matching up national posters and apps with details on where patients can find their nearest local service, and on an admin level – maximising opportunities to give out leaflets with prescriptions and appointment letters.
