Do you know your phising from your latest malware to what to do if you get click jacked? These are all threats to our safety online, both personal and businesses.

In February a team of cyber experts will be holding workshops in Carmarthen Library to explain what you can do to protect you, your family and your business online.

Officers from the City of London Police and the team from Get Safe Online will join local officers to share information about the threats, illegal scams and hoaxes as well as provide practical advice and tips on the steps you can take to stay safe.

There will be a workshop of local business owners on Friday 20th February at 5:30pm in Carmarthen Library and then a drop in session for residents and local community groups on Saturday 21st from 10 – 1pm.

Head of CID, Det Chief Superintendent Aled Davies said, “We have invited cyber safety experts from the City of London Police, along with the team from Get Safe Online to join local officers to explain to people how they can keep their business safe and how to spot illegal fraudulent scams. We know that these threats are getting bigger, and are causing more and damage and disruption to small businesses throughout the UK.

“On a personal level it is heart breaking when we receive reports of people sending their life savings to these fraudsters because the email or phone calls received sound plausible. We know that these crimes are under reported in our area as people may be ashamed to admit that they have been conned. We hope that people who attend these workshops and the drop in session share the advice and information with their family, friends and neighbours and stop the criminals in their tracks.

“We can all take simple steps to avoid becoming a victim of these attacks by opportunist criminals.

“The experts will talk about the tricks and tools that fraudsters use and explain the terms and names for some of the recent attacks that have been made on small business. They will make sure you understand what they are, how they work and how they can be prevented.

“A significant amount of cyber-crime is preventable. We want businesses to ensure that they have the latest security software installed on their computer to browse safely online. By taking basic crime prevention steps people can significantly reduce their chances of becoming a victim of crime on-line.”

Owners of small business area invited to join us on the 20th February at 5:30pm for an hour or two, and residents and local community groups are invited to a masterclass and drop in session on Saturday 21st February from 10am – 1pm. Help us to help you stay safe from online cyber-attacks and illegal frauds.
