Keith Davies AM welcomes smoking ban in cars with children

Plans announced by the Welsh Labour Government which will strengthen rules on smoking in cars will be introduced later this year.

The proposals which include smoking in cars with children will come before AMs in the Senedd for approval this summer. There has been a longstanding awareness campaign on the issue. Public opinion in a recent consultation showed 86% of respondents agreeing with the prohibition.

Research shows that harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke put children at particular risk from second-hand exposure in the confined spaces of a vehicle. This can lead to a range of chronic diseases through the thousands of harmful chemicals in second-hand smoke.

Regulations would make it an offence to smoke in a private vehicle carrying someone under the age of eighteen, or failing to prevent smoking in that vehicle.
