In response to the announcement on reopening the indoor hospitality sector and outdoor exercise facilities, Wales TUC General Secretary Shavanah Taj said:

‘We welcome Welsh Government’s announcements today, echoing our calls earlier this week.

Hospitality workers across Wales are concerned about their future employment prospects and anxious over job losses. Today’s announcement will provide a level of certainty for the sector and help prevent future job losses.

At the Wales TUC we support the Welsh Governments steady and evidence-driven approach. Workers’ safety must continue to be the top priority. No worker should be put at risk for the sake of a business’s survival. All relevant businesses must carry out a Covid-19 specific risk assessment and put appropriate safety measures in place. Making this information available in the public domain will give people a sense of confidence in coming out to support this key sector that employs many young and women workers.

We reiterate that PPE, the Test, Trace, Protect strategy (with financial support for those in self-isolation), trade union access, health and safety reps, the proper enforcement of health and safety regulations and fair work are key to the success of reopening.’
