A FAN (Friends and Neighbours) Group held its first meeting in the county on Wednesday July28.in Lakefield Hall, Llanelli.
The new Llanelli FAN group is being set up in collaboration with the Llanelli Multicultural network (LMCN). The first FAN group was founded in 2003 in Cardiff and aims to bring together friends and neighbours for an hour a week over a cup of tea or coffee.
The FAN Charity has been cited as an example of good practice by Welsh Assembly members with a special interest in social cohesion.
The new LMCN Fan Group welcomes people from all ethnic backgrounds and any age. It’s a great way to meet new friends. Project worker, Paolo Piana saidâ€we were so proud to host this first meeting in Carmarthenshire, and look forward to welcoming more people to this friendly group.â€
For more details of future meetings please call LMCN Project workers Laura Hancock on 01554-785954 or Paolo Piana on 01554-785952 or visit http://lmcn.org/.
What is a FAN group?
A FAN group has a regular meeting which can last up to an hour. The aim is
to give ALL people in the community irrespective of race, religion, colour or
ethnic background an opportunity to meet, listen and be friendly with others.
It is an informal get together; a topic is chosen at the beginning of the meeting
e.g. “Games we played as a childâ€. While the meeting is in progress one
person at a time takes it in turn to speak (with the knowledge that they will
not be asked any questions about what they have said). People do not have
to talk, they can just listen to the rest of the group and join in when they feel
happy to.
