Responding to an Age UK report on the Domestic Abuse Bill and call for greater protections for older people from experiencing domestic abuse, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, Chair of the Local Government Association’s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, said:
“Tackling domestic abuse is an issue that councils take very seriously, which is why we support measures in the Domestic Abuse Bill to improve support for more victims of all ages and stop this horrendous crime.
“In order to prevent domestic abuse from happening in the first place, there should be a greater focus on prevention and early intervention measures to tackle the root causes and support more victims.
“Significant budget pressures mean local authorities are increasingly being forced to prioritise spending for those at immediate risk of harm, rather than on vital earlier support services and prevention schemes which help stop domestic abuse.
“The upcoming Spending Review needs to provide the long-term, sustainable settlement for councils so they can protect individuals and families from the physical and psychological harm of domestic abuse, including investment in perpetrator programmes and a new National Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Strategy.”
