Dear Editor,
I strongly do not agree with this ‘firebreak lockdown’,
but as it is here again it got me thinking of this.
Image you were born in 1900. When your 14, the World War
begins and ends when your 18, in 1918 with 22 million dead.
Soon after this the Spanish flu appears and a global pandemic
between 1918 to 1920. When it ends 50 million are dead, and
at the age of 20 you are still alive. When you are 29 you survive
the Global Economic crisis, that starts with the collapse of the
New York stock exchange, causing inflation, famine and
unemployment.
When your 33 years old the Nazi come to power, and then when
you are 39 World War Two begins. And by it’s end 60 million are
dead, and 12 million are killed at the camps. Then another war
when you are 52 in Korea, and then when you are 64,
until 1975, a war in Vietnam.
A child born in 1985 thinks, her grandparents have no idea;
how difficult life is, but they have survived several wars and
catastrophes.
Today we have all the comforts in our new world, amid a new
pandemic. But we complain because we need to wear face masks.
We complain because we must stay confined to our homes
where we have food, electricity, running water, wifi and even
netflix.
A small change in our perspective can generate miracles. We should
be thankful that we are alive. We should do everything we need
to do to protect and help each other.
So how matter how much I disagree with this shut down, we have
to change our world view, and get used to this new reality.
