Budding cyclists in Carmarthenshire can now learn to cycle online in the Welsh language.

The Ready Set Ride programme is now available in both languages on the council’s Actif website and will guide a child from preparing to ride a bike, to balancing and finally to mastering the skill of pedalling.

Carmarthenshire County Council funded the Welsh translation of British Cycling’s HSBC UK programme, working closely with British and Welsh Cycling and the Youth Sport Trust

There are three sets of fun online cards with information on learning how to ride a bike and this can be carried out in a garden, a drive or a park with a tablet or phone.

The council’s executive board member responsible for sport, Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths said: “We are delighted that we have been able to support this in the Welsh language and this is yet another step we are taking on our role as the Cycling Hub for Wales. Cycling is a great way to keep active and enhances a child’s self-confidence. The programme is also fun and flexible and can be done in the garden, playground, at home or in the classroom and most importantly it is inclusive and accessible to all.”

British Cycling’s quality and workforce lead, Charlotte Connolly said: “Riding a bike is a life skill, that gives a great sense of freedom and we believe everyone should have the chance to learn. Being able to deliver the activities in Welsh opens the door to many more learners and more kids on bikes.  We are grateful for the work that Carmarthenshire put into helping get this resource translated into Welsh, working alongside Welsh Cycling, British Cycling and the Youth Sport Trust.”
