Responding to a report by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee on healthy ageing and how people can live longer in good health, Cllr Ian Hudspeth, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board, said:

“As this report highlights, too many of our later years are being spent in poor health. Councils are ideally placed to support their communities to live healthier, longer lives through joining up their other services such as housing, transport and leisure with their existing public health offer, but need adequate funding as well as the support of the NHS to do this effectively.

“Public health funding for councils has reduced by £700 million over the last five years. If we are to build back better post-pandemic and achieve longer, healthier life expectancy for all, we need the right funding now to put in the extra preventative measures to make that happen.”
