Key points:

  • Transport now accounts for 17% of Wales’ greenhouse gas emissions, of which the main sources are petrol and diesel cars.[1]

  • Overall Wales’ emissions between 1990 and 2017 fell by 25%; however transport emissions barely changed (a 3% drop).

  • Devastating effects of recent and recurrent flooding demonstrate the reality of climate change for the people of Wales.

  • Whilst not taking action affects us all, it has the greatest impact on the poorest and most vulnerable who are disproportionately hit by the impacts of climate change, poor air quality and poor access to services.

  • And people are ready for change – according to our Bike Life survey, 83% of UK adults think it’s important that action is taken to enable people to have a good standard of living without needing a car.  In addition, 80% agree the way most people travel should be good for the environment and the health of the people who live in cities and towns.[2]

  • Sustrans Cymru are calling for bold and brave action that reflects the urgency of the climate crisis we are in.

Sustrans Cymru are calling on the next Welsh Government to deliver ambitious leadership to ensure sustainable and fair future for all people in Wales.

Reducing the volume of traffic in Wales is key in the fight against climate change.

To achieve this, Sustrans Cymru are calling on the next Welsh Government to adopt their 12 manifesto asks.

Sustrans Cymru’s 2021 Manifesto: Tomorrow’s Wales, for everyone, maps out a series of actions that, if adopted, would help make Wales a sustainable, fair and resilient nation.

Christine Boston, Director, Sustrans Cymru said;

“The 2021 Senedd Election is going to be one of the most important in securing a sustainable and fair future for Wales. Sustrans Cymru want to see bold and brave action that reflects the urgency of the climate emergency.

“There is a unique opportunity to focus on walking, cycling and public transport services that serve all users equitably, creating a world-class legacy for future generations and delivering Tomorrow’s Wales, for Everyone.

“We are calling on political parties to adopt our asks in order to create a better tomorrow, for everyone.”
